I Made a Doll Today!

I've always wanted to make a cute CAT DOLL & today I finally did!

I've seen so many cute dolls in other shops & thought it would be fun to come up with my own version.  I just took an outline of one of my cat heads, sketched a simple body, cut out paper patterns & fabric, sewed, painted & VOILA!  I love how she turned out!  I don't think I've ever painted on fabric before but it was SO fun!  I thought about adding arms & legs but decided to do a simple "leggless" version for my first try.  Maybe my next one will have legs & perhaps a TAIL

Now I think she needs a name & her own little story.  Hmmmmm...

I have lots of cute fabric I bought a while back so I see lots more kitty dolls in the near future!

MEOW!

Feline Friday ~ Happy Happy News!!!

Sierra
Animal ID 10267246
Breed Domestic Shorthair/Mix
Age 0 year(s) 2 month(s) 3 day(s) old.
Sex Female
Adoption Date 5/27/2010 ~ YAY!!!

I am SO HAPPY to share some wonderful news for today's Feline Friday!!!
My baby girl foster kitten Sierra was ADOPTED yesterday from the Humane Society!
(If you are new to my blog I fostered Sierra & her sister Sophie for a month in our home)
She's now in her new forever home with a loving family!  I'm thrilled!  I just knew that ornery little monkey would find a home soon ~ she is just too irresistible!
She & her sweet siblings were staying in one of the "Kitty Cities" at the Humane Society ~ nice large rooms with climbing structures & window perches. Customers can walk right in & visit with the kitties & I can just picture Sierra climbing up someones leg & right into their heart! GOOD FOR YOU sweet girl!

I wish I had started fostering sooner.  It's been such a rewarding experience, especially seeing your fosters getting adopted!  I'd like to encourage any of you who are thinking about it to go ahead & TRY IT!!!  You'll be happy you did!
Below is a short description from the KS Humane Society's website of what fostering is about.

A volunteer foster parent assists in the rehabilitation of an animal by providing in home care. The goal of the Foster Parent Volunteer is to help animals outside of the shelter environment who are underage, sick, injured, or unsocialized so that they may become healthy, adoptable animals. Foster parents provide a clean, safe, loving environment for the animals in their homes.

Congratulations to Sierra!  I'm sure your sissy Sophie will be going home soon too!

Have a wonderful holiday weekend everyone!
Remember those you LOVE & those who fought for our FREEDOM!

Just wanted to share my latest painting with you ~ a rich colored woodland St. Francis with kitties!
I'm really happy with how it turned out.  I think I like working on the bigger 8X10s!
St. Francis will be on EBAY later today so go check him out!  And I'll definitely be making some prints of this one too!

The Cutest Bicycle Ever!

Isn't this the most adorable old vintage bicycle???
I found it on Craig's list yesterday & was so tempted to go snatch it up!  Couldn't really justify it though...I think it's ridable but I already have a bike & don't need another just because it's CUTE.  I just LOVE the look of these old ones though, especially in RED ~ my favorite color!

I was a little under the weather yesterday so didn't get to finish my new painting but I'll definitely get it wrapped up today & post a pic this afternoon or tomorrow morning.
HAPPY WEDNESDAY!!!

I finally got some painting done over the weekend - yahoo!
Here's a little peek at what I've been working on.  Can you guess who it is?  It's not hard to figure out.  It isn't quite finished yet but I hope to wrap it up today & get it listed on Ebay tomorrow.
I'm really EXCITED about this one!  It's a bigger 8X10 & I love how the rich COLORS turned out!
I'll post it here tomorrow so come back!  Hope you like it too!

Only 3 days of school left!  HIP HIP HOORAY!!!
Have a happy, happy Monday!

Feline Friday ~ How Old is Your Cat?

Today's Feline Friday topic is "CAT AGE".  Want to know how old your cat is in human years?
Check out the article & chart below!  (source)
My 2 furballs are about 36 years old!

Ever Wonder How Old Your Cat Is?

Cats usually live longer than most dogs. A dogs average life span might be 12 to 14 years, with some cats reaching 20 and more. A cat's longevity can depend on whether or not it lives indoors or is allowed outdoors (outdoor cats live an average of eight years). It also can be based on genetics, feeding, enviroment, and veterinary care. The general consensus is that at about age seven a cat can be considered "middle-aged", and at age 10 and beyond - old.

It was once generally thought that one year in the life of the cat was equivalent to seven years of a human life. A new scale of equivalents is now recognized: after the first two years, the cat's life proceeds more slowly in relation to human life and each feline year is approximately four human years.

Cat's Age: ...................................Human's Age:

6 months...............................................10 years
8 months...............................................13 years
10 months..............................................14 years
1 year....................................................15 years
18 months..............................................20 years
2 years..................................................24 years
4 years..................................................32 years
6 years..................................................40 years
8 years..................................................48 years
10 years................................................56 years
12 years................................................64 years
14 years................................................72 years
16 years................................................80 years
18 years................................................88 years
20 years...............................................96 years
21 years..............................................100 years

On a side note ~ my 2 foster kittens, Sophie & Sierra, are getting snipped this morning (spayed) & will be placed on the adoption floor as soon as they're recovered.  It was bittersweet saying goodbye to them but I KNOW they are going to get snatched up by a lucky family in no time!  They are just TOO adorable!
God bless you sweet girls!

REMEMBER ~ DON'T LITTER!  SPAY & NEUTER!

The SUN is out!  Have a wonderful weekend! xox

Foster Kitties Update

Shoe attack!

Sophie thinks shoelaces are FUN!

Sierra thinks so too!

Rough & tumble time!

I'm furrocious!
Queen of the Kitty Condo!

Happy Monday everyone!
My baby girls are growing like WEEDS!  They've practically doubled in size this past month.  They were barely over a pound when I picked them up & now they are a few ounces shy of 2!  I can't believe we've had them almost a whole month.  They are such sweeties & SO healthy & PLAYFUL!  I try & try but just can't get a good photo of them because they won't be still - ha!  Sometimes I come in the room & they're all curled up together sleeping like angels but the second they see me they're pouncing over & climbing up my leg!  As you can see they love my shoelaces & their rough & tumble sessions.  I don't know which one is ornerier  ~ they are  both wild little rascals!  I do notice that during their wrestling sessions Sierra is usually on top.

I'm scheduled to take them back to the shelter on Thursday (sniff) since they'll be 8 weeks old & 2 lbs. ~ the requirement for being spayed.  Their surgery will probably be Friday.  Then they'll be placed for adoption & on their way to their forever homes!  It'll be sad saying goodbye but I KNOW those 2 sweethearts will be adopted (kittens go fast) & if for some insane reason they aren't, I'll go back & get them!  I'm just trying to enjoy them all I can while I still have them.

I don't think we'll have time to foster any kitties before we leave for vacation next month but when we get back I'd like to get a mama & babies.  The Humane Society's been getting lots of those in lately.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK!!!
P.S.  My new Frida Painting is NOW on EBAY!

Feline Friday =^..^= Litter Box Issues

photo via McClatchy-Tribune

Today I'm posting an article about "Litter Box Issues" from our local Wichita Paws website.  I know this is a problem MANY cat owners experience & it can be exasperating! Luckily, out of 7 cats we've owned (who've owned US I should say) only 1 had a problem. This is a looong post but has lots of good ideas.  If you're short on time just skim the highlighted parts.  Happy reading!

Cat avoids the litter box? Expand his options!

Anyone who has ever owned one knows that cats can be, well, particular.

“Cats are about the pickiest animals I’ve ever met,” said Nadine Conner of All Paws Pet Center, who, with veterinarian Christen Skaer, held a seminar in April on kitty litter box issues.

Cats’ preferences — for a covered or uncovered box, for unscoopable vs. scoopable litter, for a quiet place to eliminate away from other cats — can lead to refusal to use a litter box, a problem for many cat owners. It’s the No. 1 reason cats are relinquished to shelters, Skaer said.

About 25 people showed up at Skaer Veterinary Clinic for advice on how to get their cats to eliminate in the litter box — and only in the litter box.

“A lot of these problems can be fixed,” said Skaer, admitting she has a cat with an elimination problem at home. “But it takes hard work. There’s no magic bullet.”

Elimination problems in cats may have medical causes, such as inflammatory bowel disease, urinary tract infections or diabetes — especially if the cat’s habits change suddenly, Skaer said.

“It’s really important to rule out medical issues first,” she said.

Out of those medical issues, behavioral problems can arise, Skaer said. A cat that experiences pain when using the litter box may associate the box with the discomfort and avoid the box, she said.

So it’s important, Skaer and Conner said, to offer your cat a variety of litter boxes in different styles and sizes, looking for one that suits its fancy.
“Some hate covered boxes; some hate open. Some hate one with a door,” Skaer said. "Every cat is an individual. You have to figure out what your cat is disliking about the situation.”

The No. 1 rule, Conner said, is to have a litter box for each cat in the house — plus one.
“You’ve got eight cats? Sorry. You’ve got to have nine litter boxes,” she said.

The second rule, Conner said, is to keep the litter boxes clean. That means scooping every day.
The cats “are digging in it. They want it to at least be clean,” she said.

Wash the box once a week, Conner said, using soap and hot water but no harsh cleansers like bleach, ammonia or anything with a citrus smell. Those are smells cats don’t like,” Conner said.

Next you should think about what type of litter you are using, she said.
Clay, pine-scented, dust-free, pellets? Try different kinds in different litter boxes, searching for the kind your cat likes best, she said.

Many of her customers report having success with a new kitty litter called Cat Attract, Conner said. It contains scented herbs that “make the cat want to pee on it,” she said.
The product is guaranteed to work if the instructions are followed, Conner said, which include having a litter box for each cat, plus one, and scooping every day.

Cat Attract is expensive, she said, “but it’s still cheaper than new carpet.”

Where the litter boxes are placed can also make a difference, especially in multicat households, where elimination problems can be brought on by stress, Skaer and Conner said.

“Increase the amount of space your kitty has" Skaer said. “Create places where she can get away.”

A litter box should not be placed near where the cat is fed, Conner said. Like people, “Most cats don’t like to go potty where they eat,” she said.

And if a cat is using the litter box in a laundry room and the washing machine makes noise, Skaer said, the cat may be frightened and not want to go back to that box.

Skaer and Conner recommend feeding moist canned cat food and cleaning up any areas where the cat has eliminated, using a urine-neutralizing product like Unique or Nature’s Miracle.

In the end, “A lot of it is guesswork,” Skaer said. Cat owners only have so many options:

“You can put up with the cat peeing all over, or you can get rid of it. But YOU WANT TO FIX IT, so try the different methods!”

Frida is Finito!

I got FRIDA painted up all colorful & fun & she'll be on EBAY tomorrow once I get caught up with things.  This painting is an 8x10 ~ much bigger than my usual 5x7s.  I really like how she turned out.

I'm getting ready to go visit my BFF Cindy in Kansas City for the weekend ~ yay!  We've been friends since 2nd grade & I can't imagine life without her.  We're gonna have us a FUN weekend of relaxing with no kids, going to see Letters from Juliet, eating lots of junk food & catching up on girl talk!  Can't wait!

Tomorrow is Feline Friday!  I hope to have some new pics of my foster kitties along with an article on Litter Box issues!

We're having MORE storms this evening - woohoo!  You probably think I'm strange getting excited about a thunderstorm but I love them!  Something about the gathering clouds, darkening sky, rumble of thunder, & rain on the roof.....it's exciting & soothing at the same time.
I DON'T like the tornadoes that sometimes come with the storms & we've had our share of those this week!  The sirens have gone off TWICE in the last 3 days!  I guess this IS Kansas!

Feline Friday! ~ Introducing Eli

Charlie, Eli & Chloe

Eli

Hi gang!  Meet Eli the cat.
Eli lives with author Shreve Stockton in a tiny town in Wyoming.
His brother is a coyote & his sister is a dog.  That's one COOL cat!

I love Shreve's story.  She was moving back to New York from San Fransisco when she stumbled upon a little town in Wyoming & fell in love with the place.  She went on to New York but a month later turned around & moved back to the place where she had only spent 1 day.

Shreve has a book called The Daily Coyote where she writes about her first year with "Charlie", a wild-born coyote she adopted after his parents were shot for killing sheep.  It's funny, heartwarming, full of wonderful photos & I highly recommend it!

A wonderful read!

You can read more about Shreve & her animals on her website HERE.
You can also subscribe to the "Weekly Coyote" for FREE where you'll receive a new picture of Charlie e-mailed to you every Tuesday.

Today Charlie rides in Shreve's truck, walks on a leash & adores his tomcat brother Eli & hound dog sister Chloe.  Adorable family huh?

HAPPY FRIDAY & WEEKEND!

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Frida's on Tonight!

image via sashasoren

Hope you all are having a GREAT Cinco de Mayo day!

I was SO excited to see that the movie FRIDA is on tonight!  I love that movie! Have you seen it?  I'm recording it to watch later after the noisy people go to bed so I can thoroughly enjoy it.

Busy day today ~ but the Mexican holiday inspired me to start on a new FRida painting so hope to have something to show soon.

Time for American Idol results ~ woohoo!

All in a Row

Aren't baby ducks the CUTEST???  image via nerdbird

I was driving by a small lake the other day when I saw a mama duck & all her little ducklings waddling around behind her.  So sweet!  Every April we see them along with baby goslings.  I always worry they're going to wander out on the street into the traffic but these guys stayed safe.  We have lots of Canada Geese & ducks around here & you'll often see traffic stopping to let them cross the road.  I love that.
I love little duckies!  I love fuzzy baby birds!

I love SPRING!

P.S.  My FRIDA PRINT was featured in an ETSY TREASURY with a "CINCO-de-MAYO" theme!
Lots of really fun & colorful items!  Come look right HERE!

Happy Tuesday! xoxox
